The Martian: The international bestseller behind the Oscar-winning blockbuster film

Author(s): Andy Weir

Fiction - Sci-Fi/Fantasy

Robinson Crusoe on Mars A survival story for the 21st century and the international bestseller behind the major film from Ridley Scott starring Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain. I'm stranded on Mars.I have no way to communicate with Earth.I'm in a Habitat designed to last 31 days.If the Oxygenator breaks down, I'll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I'll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I'll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I'll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I'm screwed. Andy Weir's second novel Artemis is now available

When a mission to Mars goes horribly wrong, astronaut Mark Watney is left for dead on the red planet. Not one to give up, he sets about trying to survive the four years until the next Martian mission is due to arrive. Narrated through Mark's log entries, and simultaneously by the scientists at NASA and his home-bound crew, The Martian is an absolute stunner of a book. Impeccably researched, brilliantly written, suspenseful, nerve-wracking, and really funny, this is not so much science fiction as science fact (or soon-to-be-fact). Sci-fi for people who don't like the genre. 100% my book of the year. - Lucy

This was a really fun read. Who knew that a story about a single man trapped on Mars could be so entertaining? This has been described as sci-fi for non sci-fi fans, although I'm sure that lovers of this genre will find it equally rewarding. The pacing of this novel is excellent, and I was never bored, even when the protagonist, Mark Watney, is simply planting potatoes. Film rights have been purchased and this is being adapted in the near future. It's perfect material for the big screen because of everything I have just mentioned, and will undoubtedly be a box-office hit. It's a really good read and I'd recommend it to most people. - Holly

"The best book I've read in ages. Clear your schedule before you crack the seal. This story will take your breath away faster than a hull breech. Smart, funny, and white-knuckle intense, The Martian is everything you want from a novel." -- Hugh Howey New York Times bestselling author of Wool "Think Apollo 13 ... on Mars! ... A saga of courage, ingenuity and humour - and utterly convincing thanks to superb research. The best space disaster story since Clarke's A Fall of Moondust." -- Stephen Baxter "The amount of research here is astounding. We're suckers for well-grounded fiction, and on the technical side, The Martian is exemplary ... witty ... funny" SFX "A book I just couldn't put down! It has the very rare combination of a good, original story, interestingly real characters and fascinating technical accuracy...reads like MacGyver meets Mysterious Island." -- Astronaut Chris Hadfield Commander of the International Space Station and author of An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth "The Martian kicked my ass! Weir has crafted a relentlessly entertaining and inventive survival thriller, a MacGyver-trapped-on-Mars tale that feels just as real and harrowing as the true story of Apollo 13." -- Ernest Cline New York Times bestselling author of Ready Player One

ANDY WEIR has always been fascinated by space travel and like most kids growing up wanted to be an astronaut. Instead, he wrote a book - The Martian - which he self published on Amazon in 2012. It went on to receive 1,500 reviews on Amazon, averaging 4.7 out of 5 stars, with similar success on Goodreads. The film rights have been bought by Fox. Andy hopes this will be the first of many trips into space.
