Local Description

Nabokov’s classic story of Humbert Humbert, the 37-year-old man who becomes obsessed with a twelve-year-old girl, was one of the most difficult and disturbing books that I’ve ever read. I don’t know whether to commend Nabokov for what he achieved or condemn him for even considering to write a book such as this. What I’m most interested in is the mythology that surrounds this book, and in particular the way it has been represented visually since its publication. There has been a whole book published on the visual representations of Lolita called Lolita: the Story of a Cover Girl. This shows the different approaches that designers have taken over the years, accompanied by essays looking at how the novel has been treated. I’ve also designed my own cover for the novel, which was a great creative challenge. - Holly
