The Community is a society where there is no conflict or suffering or want or inequality, where everything is ordered and planned and safe and comfortable, and all the world’s ‘problems’ are solved. Is this the best of all possible worlds? When 12-year-old Jonas is chosen to become the Community’s new Receiver of Memory, he learns and experiences all the painful and all the beautiful memories denied the other Community members, and learns the hidden cost of this ‘perfect’ life. How will he react to this knowledge? My 11-year-old and I got a lot out of reading this book and discussing the many issues it raises. - Thomas
