Kittyhawks and Coconuts

Author(s): Keith Mulligan

Kittyhawks and Coconuts is the story of a young New Zealander, caught up in the events of 1941,who went to war as a Royal New Zealand Airforce pilot.Keith Mulligan blends his story with that of his fellow pilots,a shared experience of just what it was like to learn to fly and then learn to fight. And if they flew hard, they also played hard-tomorrow they could well be far away, and some never came back. This is the story of the first three tours of No16(F) Squadron, covering a period when the RNZAF was fighting for supremacy of the skies in the Solomon Islands, and then,as the Japanese opposition ebbed, taking the war to the enemy on the ground. This is a book of personal recollections and of personal encounters, experiences, observations and opinions. It is the story of life as a wartime pilot in the RNZAF and records the excitement, the danger, the drama, the tragedy, the humour and a little bit of romance.
