Vincent Ward was born in 1956 in Greytown. After graduating from art school at the University of Canterbury he began writing and making films. His debut feature Vigil, and his following two films, The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey, and Map of the Human Heart were the first feature films by a New Zealander to be officially selected for the Cannes Film Festival. He went on to make What Dreams May Come, starring Robin Williams, which won an Oscar for its visual effects in 1999, River Queen and Rain of the Children. In 2007 he was awarded an Order of New Zealand Merit for his contribution to film making. He lives in Auckland with his partner and two children.
